Optimizing Tree Surveying with Multiple Software Solutions
Background
Tree surveying can vary significantly depending on the scope and scale of the project, from small planning site to managing large tree inventories across multiple locations. To ensure precision and efficiency in gathering data, we at TTC rely on a range of tree surveying software tools. Currently, we use three types of software—Ottis, arbEvlove, and Axiscape.
Key Outcomes
- Tailored Data Collection: Utilising a suite of three different software tools ensures the optimal tool is selected for each project’s specific scope and scale.
- Enhanced Efficiency and Precision: The selective use of software improves data collection efficiency and accuracy for diverse needs, from large inventories to small-site custom assessments.
- Cost-Effective and Versatile Service: The multi-software strategy allows the company to adapt quickly and cost-effectively to any project, regardless of size or complexity.
Challenge
The challenge lies in selecting the software that best fits the specific needs of each task while ensuring high-quality, accurate data collection. For example, if we are plotting trees on a small site without a topographical survey, we would not use the same software to conduct a tree condition assessment on a large site as each system has its own strengths and limitations.
Solution
By using three different surveying software tools, we are able to take advantage of the strengths of each one. Ottis is ideal for larger-scale projects where detailed tree management and tracking are needed. Its comprehensive features make it perfect for managing over 600 trees, streamlining data collection with GPS, and ensuring consistency across the site that clients can have direct access to.
For more in-depth, customised assessments on smaller sites, we use arbEvlove, which provides advanced tools for arborists. Lastly, Axiscape is our go-to for our BS5837 projects as it has a range of tools built in to allow us to plot trees not shown on a topographical survey.
Results
Using multiple software solutions allows us to adapt to the specific needs of each project, ensuring that the right data is captured in the most efficient way. Whether it is working on a large-scale planning project, managing diverse tree inventories, or just mapping individual trees, we can select the tool that best suits the task at hand.
Conclusion
Having a range of surveying software tools at our disposal enhances both the quality and efficiency of the data we collect. This approach ensures that we can provide clients with accurate, tailored solutions no matter the size or complexity of the project in a cost-effective way.
